My name is Nelson Palacios and I was born in Bogota, Colombia. I was born hearing and at my 4 years old I became deaf by unknown reasons. I have got a young sister who is hearing and I’m the only deaf member of the family. So I have changed schools my whole middle school years in Colombia due my struggles of understanding teachers at school till I moved to California when I was in seventh grade, I struggled at my first school but then I joined California School for the Deaf, Fremont when I was in eight grade till I graduated from high school. Thit is the school where I learned ASL which helped me with better communications, English was also one of the most helpful language that school helped me improve since my first language is Spanish. I also completed my four years in high school being part of a cheerleading team. After high school , I decided to go to college at Rochester Institute of Technology “RIT”, now as of today, I’m a second year student majoring in 3D Graphic Technology who also is on the RIT cheerleading team.
Purpose of this BLOG?
I have made this Blog for a project I am doing in Writing Seminar. The title of the project is about the Cornell box, which basically means I have to find some objects defining me or that are huge part of my life. Then make a box where I will be placing those objects and at the end, I will place the box in a specific are at RIT for the ImagineRIT event on April 27th where the public will analyze each object figuring how do those explain me.
I picked a shoes box then covered it all with black paper, since I always like black boxes. Then I gained four different objects that I felt a connection with. Those objects are: 1) My seventh grade school ID, reminds me of the last mainstream school I attended to. 2) A real tiny box with wireless earphones that my mom found in a Hotel where we was working, because I love music so incredibly much and since the box brought wireless earphones this makes me feel like the box also brought music. 3) A broken CI wire. I’m a CI user “Cochlear Implant” since I was 5 years old after the hearing loss. That CI wire was recently broken and since I use CI I decided to place that broken wire into the box because it defines me using a CI. 4) A small piece of ripped book paper, this defines me because I love reading books so much, so Instead of placing a whole book in the box, I used a ripped book paper. 5) a small cheerleading bow to hang my cheer bag, I don’t use it but I save it somewhere inmy room, because that makes me feel like a cheerleader.
To wrap up, all these objects along with the box has a whole unique meaning that defines me, which I feel like that box defines me as an Introvert and person who loves dancing to music, not just that but I also love education particularly in English, which is why I love reading books, I really enjoy them and gives me a better knowledge in words. This whole box explains about the unique identity as a person with great mind setting for the future and a fun person to dance with.
